The Arts Factory has been Byron's backpacker heartland for decades, and it still draws the crowd that wants more than a hotel room. Set back from town on Skinners Shoot Road, the property runs on a loose, creative energy that's part hostel, part arts precinct. Expect a mix of dorm beds and private rooms, communal spaces that feel genuinely lived-in, and the kind of transient social scene that makes solo travel easy. It's not polished, and that's the point. The surrounding gardens and lagoon give it a bush-camp feel that most accommodation in Byron can't replicate at any price. For budget travellers who'd rather spend their money at the Pass than on thread-count, this is the logical base. Book direct and check what's on, the venue has a history of hosting live music and community events worth timing your stay around.
The Arts Factory is such a beautiful and unique place to stay in Byron Bay. Set in nature with flowing water around the property, it feels like a little escape, but at the same time it has amazing, fun energy. We stayed for three nights on one of the islands and loved the sound of the water around us. The bed was comfy, everything was clean, and the room was well equipped with a sofa and stunning views. The ambience here is unreal, it’s the perfect mix of relaxing during the day and great vibes throughout. There was volleyball going on non-stop, which made it super social and fun, and the pool right next to the rooms was a massive bonus. You can rent bikes and explore Byron like a local, and it’s within walking distance to everything. Lovely staff, a fun bar, great atmosphere, and overall amazing vibes. Would definitely stay here again!!!
My friends and I stayed at this hostel for a few days. I recommend it for the atmosphere, which is really super chill and friendly. The place has a lot of potential, and it feels comfortable. However, in terms of cleanliness, it was a complete disaster and we were very disappointed. We reported the problem to reception and were assured that a deep cleaning would be done the next day, but nothing changed. The floors were never cleaned, the rooms were extremely dirty as well, the common areas were very dirty, and the kitchen… don’t even get me started. After staying in quite a few hostels, this is the first time we’ve seen anything like this. It’s really a shame because the place is nice, but the cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired.

Wategos Beach
The only property sitting directly on Wategos Beach, Raes trades on position and a long-running restaurant reputation. Mediterranean in feel, small in scale, and priced accordingly. If you're going to spend up in Byron, the address alone makes a reasonable argument.

Byron Bay
Forty-five acres of coastal wetland, freestanding villas pointed at the trees, and private beach access. Elements sits deliberately apart from Byron's centre. The distance from the main strip isn't a drawback; it's the whole idea.

Byron Bay
Byron Bay attracts travellers who care how lightly they tread. But do the places they sleep actually share that value? From certified carbon-neutral rainforest properties to a holiday park at the foot of Cape Byron Lighthouse, here are the eco-friendly stays that earn the label, across every price point.
Byron Bay accommodation runs from a dorm bunk near the lighthouse to a freestanding villa on forty-five acres of coastal wetland. The choice shapes the whole trip. Here is the full spectrum, by budget tier, with suburb context and honest assessments of what you are actually paying for.
Location set just on the outskirts of the beautiful Australian Jungle. Hostel FILLED with nature and greenery not to mention the wildlife. Check out the cheeky bush turkeys! Cheaper than the rest of Byron at this time of year but still expensive for no air con. I had the pleasure of being served by Katie who welcomed me and has made my stay smooth sailing. This seems like a wonderful, connected community full of diverse and interesting people. The only thing missing was activities offered by the hostel. Loved my experience. Will be back soon
This is such a nice hostel! there was music in the kitchen, it felt like a party where everyone is welcome and friends. People at reception were soo nice. I talked to Kate and she was lovely and helped me out. Definitely would recommend. Such a nice vibe here. feeling young wild and free
I will start with the few positives first. The staff at reception were friendly on arrival and the island private double tent was nice and clean. Why I would not recommend this hostel: The loud music was horrendous. One evening they played deafening drum and base music, making our tent shake. This continued until midnight, although hostal rules stayed 10pm quiet. A rave at the hostel bar was not advertised when we booked. This had the worst hostal kitchen I have ever seen. It was dirty, messy and understocked with equipment. I struggled to find a single spoon to eat my food with. The sinks were piled high with dirty plates. The ‘hippy’ aesthetic seems to be used as an excuse for dirt, mould and careless guests, expecting someone else to clear up after them. The laidback vibe is cool and unique.. but should not mean the residents act without respect to others. Smoking. Despite the mass of no smoking signs, the whole site stank of weed and tobacco. Even smoking in and on the kitchen balcony. Any police officer would have a field day in this place.. and that’s before mentioning the car park. Parking. Or lack of.. the car park was a danger zone. Drunk and high hippies roaming the road not caring when cars were coming. The car park was full of vans, many of which had people sleeping in them, seemingly using the sites facilities for free, taking away a car park spot from paying guests. We struggled to find an alternative free overnight car park spot (which is a miracle to find in Byron Bay), and ended up having to walk far. The staff should ask vans to leave when not paying. I would not recommend this hostel. The town was super cute!! But our visit was clouded by arts factory lodge.
Seventeen acres of subtropical rainforest on Broken Head Road, with carbon-neutral credentials that hold up to scrutiny. Far enough from town to feel like a proper escape, close enough to matter. The southern Byron address is the point.
