Mezcal and mezze in the same breath, on Jonson Street's busiest stretch. The Mez Club pitches itself somewhere between a serious cocktail bar and a Middle Eastern-leaning restaurant, which is a harder needle to thread than it sounds. At price level three of four, you're committing to a proper night out rather than a quick drink. The fit-out and concept suggest a crowd that's dressed up slightly, staying late, and ordering rounds. Without a track record of reviews to draw from, it's harder to say whether the food matches the ambition of the bar programme. Go with the cocktails as your anchor, treat the food as a bonus, and see how the room feels on a Friday.
the food was amazing. we were served by 2 waitresses. the first one was very nice and welcoming. she served us till we finished our entree and we were really enjoying the meal and the service. the second one who served us after the entree was rude in a way. she would cut to clear the table in while I was talking to my partner, and mind you we just finished eating that dish and she didn’t even give us more than 2 mins to enjoy after. and she kept doing that as soon as we finished a dish. I understand the need to send dirty dishes straight away to the kitchen for wash up but that was pure straight up pressuring us to finish as soon as we finished a dish so we leave as soon as possible. I work in hospitality and this is not the kind of service you want to offer to your patrons especially with the price tag and the atmosphere the venue is offering. we left a 5% tip, it’s not much but we hoped it went to the first waitress who served us.
I’ve been coming to Mez every time I’m in Byron. The service is consistently excellent, and the atmosphere is lovely—it attracts everyone from young groups to mature couples enjoying the Mediterranean/Moroccan menu. However, my last dinner was disappointing food-wise. The fish of the day crudo was yellowfin tuna in mango sauce with potato crisps and finely chopped tomato-onion topping. I found it quite bland and lacking zing. The portion was small too, even for one person, let alone for sharing as the menu suggests all plates are designed to do. The market fish was snapper—I was served a pan-fried snapper tail, again quite bland, with one kipfler potato underneath swimming in a familiar tomato-onion vinaigrette, this time with olives on top. The vinaigrette released so much liquid that it made what I assume was supposed to be crispy fish skin disappointingly soggy. The chocolate crème brûlée was quite nice: soft and creamy with a thin sugar crust sprinkled with salt flakes. Pricing is in line with other ‘trendy’ dining spots in Byron, but the quality doesn’t meet the average anymore, which is a shame because this used to be one of my favorite places.

Byron Bay
Jonson Street's most reliable night-out anchor. Live music, a workable bar, and a crowd that mixes locals with clued-in visitors. Reasonable by Byron standards, which is saying something. Check what's on before you arrive.

Byron Bay
Away from the main strip on Bayshore Drive, North Byron Hotel is the affordable, unpretentious option for people who actually live here. Cold beer, no dress code, prices that make sense. The kind of pub Byron needs more of.

Byron Bay
A bar on Jonson Street's main drag, Ember is positioned where Byron's nightlife actually happens. Central enough to anchor an evening or extend one. Best assessed on a quieter night when the strip isn't at full volume.
Byron Bay will sell you a cold-pressed juice at 7am and a mezcal cocktail at midnight. The bar scene is genuinely good, properly relaxed, and mid-sized enough to cover in a long weekend. Here is where to go, what nights are worth it, and which spots suit a solo drink versus a planned evening out.
Forty-eight hours in Byron done properly: a kayak around the Cape, dinner above the sand at Wategos, and enough hinterland to make the drive feel worth it. This is the weekend itinerary that skips the tourist traps and books the right tables, in the right order, at the right time of year.
Excellent service, our waitress was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Great music 💃🏼 The food was also very tasty and fresh. We had the oysters, tuna crudo (delish), hummus (divine), the prawns and salad. Was enough for us in the heat. We would have had more food like the chicken tagine but it was just too hot to sit there. They desperately need fans or a mister outside, it was unbearable the heat. Would be 5 stars if they had fans to cool us down so we could stay longer.
We hat the bottomless brunch menu and each dish was unreal. The service was also excellent they were very attentive and didnt rush us and ensured we had drinks as needed. The fit out is extremely nice and adds to a great atmosphere. Highly recommend booking here for lunch or dinner whilst in Byron
