Mullumbimby's town pub has rooms upstairs, and that alone makes it worth knowing about. The Middle Pub sits on Burringbar Street in the heart of Mullum, one of the few genuinely affordable places to stay in the Northern Rivers without driving to a highway motel. The vibe is pub-adjacent in the best sense: no wellness retreat theatre, no linen menus, just a straightforward bed close to the main strip, the farmers market, and the coffee shops that make this town worth the detour from Byron. At a budget price point, expectations should be set accordingly, but for anyone wanting to actually sleep in Mullumbimby rather than commute to it, this is the practical answer. Book directly and ask about room options.

What People Say
I ate lunch at this pub yesterday with my family. We eat there at least once a month. When being served by the very tall foreigner guy at the till in the bistro, he forgot to ask for my members card, and l forgot to show it. When l mentioned it he just shrugged his shoulders and said “Oh well”. When l sat down l realised it was nearly $10 as there was 6 of us. So l went to the bar to see if l could redeem the points or something, and he came over to me from the bistro and said how much is it and you don’t need to complain. I said l haven’t even spoken to anyone. With that he went to the till and threw $10 at me. And the look he gave me was actually scary. It was nothing short of a death stare. With a smirk that was sinister. Very smug and over the top rude. When the lunch came out mine wasn’t there and by the time l got it, it was cold and my son had to ask for it and it was sitting on the bench. He took the buzzer of me when my family got their lunch and then never bothered to give me a sign that it was ready nor bring it over. Very rude man. My lunch was dreadful by the time l got it, and my family where finished eating. So obviously he deliberately did it and absolutely ruined my day. The bar staff their are awesome, always have been. But unfortunately after this incident, we won’t eat there again. Never in my life have l had anyone give me a dirty look like that bloke. It was something that even words can’t describe.
It was a great stay only marred by the kitchen service. At 8.10pm we attempted to order and was rudely told the kitchen is closed. This was not true as 6 dockets were still up to be cooked. I had attempted to call from our room to order and was told we cant take phone orders, you have to come down, so we come down within 5 minutes, only to be told the kitchen was closed... The Krappyioke was fabulous and the vibe in the hotel was good. The bar staff were busy but it's not hard to smile..

Hotel Brunswick
Brunswick Heads
The pub Brunswick Heads actually drinks at. Cold beer, no-fuss food, and a front bar that hasn't tried to become something else. In a town that's resisted the Byron creep, the Brunswick Hotel is a big part of why.

Stone & Wood Brewery Byron Bay
Byron Bay
The birthplace of Pacific Ale, Stone & Wood's Byron taproom pours fresh from the tank inside the working brewery. Industrial setting, cold beer done right, and a crowd that spans Friday knock-offs to curious out-of-towners tracing the source of their favourite can.

The Mez Club | Cocktail Bar | Restaurant | Byron Bay
Byron Bay
Mezcal cocktails and mezze plates on Jonson Street, priced for a proper night rather than a casual one. The concept sits somewhere between cocktail bar and Middle Eastern restaurant. Worth a visit when you want somewhere with a bit more intent than the average Byron strip.

Railway Friendly Bar
Byron Bay
A Jonson Street pub that's been holding its ground while Byron reinvented itself around it. Cold beers, mixed crowd, no attitude. The kind of place where locals and visitors end up at the same bar stool without anyone making it weird.
